Bisham Barn Owl Group (BBOG) was set up in 2014 to monitor and conserve the Barn Owl population in the local area.
We advise farmers, land owners and managers on installing owl boxes, which we then monitor as part of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) Nest Recording Scheme. The adult birds and their chicks are ringed under BTO licence enabling each bird to be individually identified and followed throughout its lifetime.
We currently monitor over 300 owl and kestrel boxes, of which half are Barn Owl boxes.
BBOG is registered as a BTO "Retrapping Adults for Survival" scheme (RAS). This project aims to capture the majority of adult Barn Owls at a number of sites across the country each year. The resulting annual survival data is used to model trends in the UK Barn Owl population. BBOG is one of only four such scheme members.
We work with the following organisations locally:
Bucks Berks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT); National Trust; Woodland Trust; Forestry Commission; Bracknell Forest DC; Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead; Chiltern Rangers; Chiltern Society; and Thames Water.
Through a partner volunteer group - Bisham Nest Box Group (BNBG), we are able to arrange the supply and installation of owl boxes at very competitive prices. Details can be found on the "Owl Boxes" page or at BNBG boxes
